Counterfeit Kit Challenge January 2014

Hi Everyone!

Another one of the new things I want to try this year is the Counterfeit Kit Challenge. What a brilliant idea this is - the basic concept is that you put together a kit from your own stash, using Kit Clubs as inspiration - genius!

Once you've put your kit together, you can link up to the CKC blog and then start stash-busting! Tutorials and challenges are posted throughout the month to get you going and there's even a blog-hop which you can join in with - fabulous!

Here's the kit we are counterfeiting for January - Hip 2 Be Square December 2013 Kit ...

I've been peeking from the sidelines at CKC for a couple of years, thinking how much fun it looked but not quite getting around to it, but now I figure the best way to get started is to jump right in ... :o)

The first thing which struck me about this kit was the gorgeous mixture of sherbet colours with pops of black and white - a really fresh colour combo which reminded me of an old-fashioned sweety shop! Other fun elements I wanted to pick up on included - woodgrain, chevrons, acrylic and acetate elements, shiny embellishments and doodling.

It was so much fun trawling through my stash and realising, yet again, just how much stuff I have! Here is my main kit, which I'm going to call "Winter Mixture" ...

I started with some textured cardstock and assorted patterned papers from several different collections
  • Echo Park "Dots & Stripes", "Winter Wishes", "Here & Now"
  • Grace Taylor "Millie's Garden"
  • American Crafts Amy Tangerine "Sketchbook", Dear Lizzy "5th & Frolic"
  • Crate Paper "Little Bo Peep"
  • Glitz "Dapper Dan"
  • Kesi' Art "Anti-Cyclone"

Then I added some part-used sticker sheets and journaling cards ...

  • Grace Taylor "Millie's Garden"
  • Elles Studio "Lil' Snippets"
  • Jen Allyson "Cut'n'Paste"
  • Echo Park
  • Lily Bee "Sweet Shoppe"
  • Fancy Pants "Memories Captured"
  • Prima Journaling Spot Stickers

Some Dovecraft doilies and a small woodgrain-patterned paper bag

  • Gold stars in a glassine bag
  • Home-made fancy brads
  • tiny hearts punched from woodgrain pp
  • Prima Sugar Dot hearts
  • Acrylic alphas by Rico Designs
Here's how they all look together ...

... not quite so beautifully-arranged, but I'm getting the overall effect I was after.
Now for some alphas ...

I took a hotch-potch of various white chipboard alphas and doodled on them with black pen to get the effect of the doodled Thickers in the challenge kit. Also chucked in some other part-used alpha sets for good measure!

So, now for the add-on embellishment kit, which I'm going to call Liquorice Allsorts :o)
Here's the Hip 2 b Square Add-On Kit ...

AND we were given extra inspiration in the form of the Oh, Deer Me December Embellishment Kit

I've sort of mixed these two up and then pulled together a mixture of ready-made and DIY embellishments ...

  • Plain coloured paperclips embellished with buttons and flowers stuck on with Glossy Accents
  • Shapes punched from kraft cardstock
  • Pound Shop bling!
  • Ranger Fragments decorated with peel-offs and rub-ons to echo the acrylic frames
  • Arrow cut from acetate packaging and finished with peel-offs, again inspired by the acrylic frames
  • Plain brads covered with pp circles, distressed and coated with Glossy Accents
  • Tiny hearts punched from woodgrain pp
  • Clear Epoxy stickers backed with pp and trimmed
  • Bottle top crushed in the Cuttlebug and decorated with pp and sticker
  • Handful of Flair buttons
  • Star-shaped gems stuck on to lengths of wire with Golden Heavy Matt Gel Medium
  • Snowflake brads
I'll post mini-tutorials for all the DIY items during the week if you would like to know how I made them.

And finally, inspired by the kit, a few more bits and bobs from my hoard ...

  • Large Woodware plain white chipboard numbers
  • AC Thickers "Sunrise" alphas
  • Frog Dog Studio stamps
  • Heidi Swapp stamps
  • Maya Road acrylic houses
  • Cath Kidston fabric buttons
  • Twine, washi tape and Scotch Expressions tape
  • A tin to keep the bits in, just like the kit!

Well! I think that's it PHEW!!! Now I can't wait to get started ... watch this space :o)xxx
