Spring Fever and Big Buns!

Hi everyone,

You know how sometimes when the sun comes streaming in the windows, you suddenly realise how grubby everything looks and you get the urge to clean and organise? Well, it doesn't happen to me very often, but it did yesterday, so I spring-cleaned the kitchen and even sorted out my spices, cleared out the old ones, refilled and labelled all the jars ...

... it's not a great picture, because my spice shelf is in a dark corner of the kitchen. The basket is where I keep the refill bags ...

We go through a lot of spices quite quickly, so it's much cheaper to buy large bags and refill the little jars. Major Disaster! I'm out of coriander seeds, could have sworn I had a bag of them - that wouldn't have happened if my spices hadn't been in such a muddle ...

I had promised DH a home-made chocolate cake, but then I realised I had run out of eggs as well, so made a batch of cheese scones instead ...

... I put in some chopped onion, sage and chives from the garden as well - yummy! But DH was still hankering for chocolate cake, so I decided to experiment with some sweet bread dough and make a chocolate and cinnamon version of Chelsea buns ...

... not very pretty and about the size of my head, but they did satisfy the cake craving and fill the house with the smell of baking bread, chocolate and cinnamon - mmmmm! Since we live in Bowthorpe rather than Chelsea, I'm going to call them Bowthorpe Buns!

On the back of the bread flour bag there was a recipe for making a sourdough starter, so I had a go at that as well ...

... you just mix 70g of the flour with 70 ml warm water and stir it until you get this gloopy mess, then add the same again every day for a week. Apparently by that time it will be bubbling and you can keep it in the fridge and share it with your friends. The idea is that you use 150g of the starter instead of yeast to make a sourdough loaf - I'll let you know how it goes.

There's also a website on the back of the flour bag which looks interesting - https://www.bakingmad.com

Thanks for popping in today, see you again soon :o)xxx
