Weirdly Wonky Selfie

Hi Everyone,

It's another beautiful bright Autumnal day here in Norfolk UK. When I've done a few little chores, I plan to play in my room for an hour or two, then I'll have a nice walk through the sunshine to spend some time with my son, and this evening I have a card-making jolly to look forward to - what a perfect day!! I hope you're having a good day wherever you are :o)

It took me several days to work through the lesson for week 41 of Life Book 2016, but it was a really enjoyable process and as always I tried out lots of new ideas. The wonderful Kristin Dudish showed us how to paint a multi-layered self portrait. Mine turned out very strangely I think, but I'm going to share it anyway as it's part of my LB journey ...

Hmmmmm .... yes .... definitely needs work!! :o) I'm glad I went with Kristin's suggestion to take a picture of the background before painting the portrait as I really liked this effect ...

This was a many-layered process and I kept coming back to it over the course of a week. I started by scribbling positive stuff about myself all over the background; then washed over it in watercolours; doodled some favourite images in biro over that; painted a quote using a brush dipped in black acrylic paint; filled in the spaces with colour.

Now it was time to sketch the outline onto the background. Kristin showed us how to use a grid technique using a printed photo as a reference, but I couldn't print, so just drew it free hand from a photo on the laptop - possibly had I used the grid technique it might not have turned out so weirdly wonky!! Kristin showed us how to mix a greytone palette, which was really fun, and I love the greytone image against the colourful background.

Here's a picture I took when I had just started to block in the areas of light and shadow, before I got totally absorbed in the process and forgot to take any more pictures until the end ...

It will certainly make a strikingly colourful addition to my Life Book that's for sure :o)

Thanks for visiting my blog today, see you again soon and have fun creating this week!

You're so good at drawing more realistic faces, Annie! I didn't even attempt this lesson. I will though, hoping that the grid method will help me get it right. I can't believe you just eyeballed this! My biggest problem is that I would want to make myself look much prettier than in real life, LOL, and that means full cosmetic surgery! I will try to resist that urge! The glasses must have been very challenging to draw! Loving your colourful background! Enjoy your day - I should have gone for a walk too but I was too lazy! Now I'm regretting it.

I wish I could draw 1/2 as good as you...wonky or not, it looks like YOU! So I reckon that's a winner, right there....love that slightly translucent effect down the bottom, so you can see to the painting behind. LOOOOVE that bg for sure. Bet you do that one again. You are learning so much from this course!!

My goodness - your are coming along in leaps and bounds Annie. You may not be thrilled with this, but it captures your look and your style. The skin tones are lovely and the background looks arty farty - so just perfect for you. I'm in awe of your drawing skills.

WOW Annie... I can't believe how much you have learned on this journey and your painting is just incredible. That background is just amazing. So clever and I think it may be a weirdly wonky selfie of you but you painted it and that is amazing. Love it.
