Playing catch-up with the Ode to Women challenge originally set by Olga Furman, this week the inspiring women are nurses from the 19th century through to the present day. The third one was this beautiful but anonymous Japanese nurse wearing the uniform of the Japanese Red Cross circa 1905. The photo reference was very striking - mostly sepia-toned, with just a touch of pinky-red on her lips and a single branch of cherry blossom ...
I decided to go for a Japanese-style watercolour effect, using watercolour pencils and a very limited palette to reflect the style of the original photograph. I liked the idea of using the same colours to add splatters at the bottom, but I wish I had made the splatters bigger and fewer.
