DIY Bellies!

My Counterfeit Kit for February is called Hearts & Flowers ...

We had three kits from Kits de Somni to inspire us this month. I love the black/white/pink/red/pale blue colour combination in Choice #1 and I picked out elements from all three choices which I wanted to include in my kit -

  • die cuts
  • arrows
  • chipboard hearts
  • tags
  • chalkboard effect
  • little pockets with string fasteners
  • vellum frames
  • cassette tapes
  • wood veneers
  • elegant fonts
  • doilies

Some of these things I already had in my stash, but I had to get creative and "forge" a few items - which of course is half the fun of Counterfeit Kits! Here's what I did ...

I gathered up a few bits - bare chipboard heart shapes, some vellum and leftovers of various patterned papers and some MME Chalk Studio frames ...

Now I love these frames just as they are, but I thought it would be fun to add some vellum to them, to echo the vellum polaroid frames in the inspiration kit, so I just measure the opening, cut out the vellum to fit ...

... and stuck it on the back with strong tape ...

... et voila! They do look cute don't they and I think they will look cool with patterned paper showing through them.

Then I thought I'd make a little envelope with a twine fastener, inspired by the tiny ones in the kit. I've had this envelope template for ages, it's fantastic when you want to make an envelope to match a special card - this one does square envelopes and the other one in the set does rectangular ones.

All I had to do was to draw around it, cut out the shape, ink the edges, score as indicated by the notches, fold it up and stick together ...

I added two little fasteners and some twine to finish it off - cute!

Next came the chipboard hearts - the ones in the inspiration kit are all different patterns and colours but I don't have any like that so I used some scraps to cover these bare ones.

Just draw around the shape first - remember to put the shape face down on the wrong side of the paper so you end up with it the right way around (especially important with things like letters!) ...

Use your favourite adhesive to stick the paper to the chipboard - doesn't matter what kind, but make sure it goes to the edges and give it a good burnish with a bone folder ...

... then just sand and ink the edges. Easy-peasy!

I saved all the tiny scraps (waste not want not) and got out some punches and a tag template to make some little "die cuts" as included in the inspiration kit ...

... finishing off by doodling around them with black and white pens.

Finally, I dug out a couple of cassette printables which I found on Mary Anne's blog - a very clever and talented lady and very generous too, she shares all kinds of printables for Project Life and so on as well as lots of creative ideas to inspire you.

So, that's my DIY Bellies for this month - check out the Counterfeit Kit Challenge Blog for challenges, tutorials and inspiration all month long. You can link up to share your own kits and creations and if you like you can even take part in the members' Blog Hop later in the month. Go on - you know you want to!

Thanks for popping in, see you again soon :o)xxx

Excellent counterfeiting - I especially love the doodling on your shaped embellies

Beautiful job with your counterfeits. I think I would prefer yours over the real ones. :) Especially your die cuts - I never think to doodle around the edges (or maybe I'm too lazy).
