WOYWW #279

Hi Everyone,

It's not just Wednesday, it's What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday - time to head over to Julia's Stamping Ground and see what everyone is up to this week.

Not much happening on my workdesk today as we've been away in beautiful Budapest, but I did bring home some souvenirs for my scrapbook and they are sitting on my desk waiting ...

There is an amazing fleamarket on the outskirts of the city, where I found some treasures to bring home ...

These children's story books are not in perfect condition ...

... and I don't understand a word, but the illustrations are beautiful ...

... and the little girl (who I think may be called Kati) looks very much like I did many years ago ...

Here she is again, a very solemn and thoughtful little girl ...

These will be perfect to repurpose as art journals, if I can bring myself to do the deed!

During our guided walk around the Jewish quarter in Pest, we saw the factory where traditional Hungarian playing cards (magyar kartya) were made by master card painter Schneider Jozsef, so we were delighted to find these at the flea market ...

Instead of the characters we are used to over here, the Hungarian pack features images from the William Tell (Tell Wilmos) story.

I love how someone has replaced a lost king (Kiraly)??? by drawing one on a scrap of card, which looks like an airline tag or something when you turn it over ...

Not sure what I'm going to do with these yet, but for the equivalent of a couple of quid I just couldn't resist :o)

If by chance anyone happens to read this who understands Hungarian and can tell me anything about the books or the cards that would be wonderful!

Thanks for visiting today, see you over at Julia's!

Super market finds - you did right not to leave them on the stall - they might never have found someone who could breath new life into them ! Ali #13
Thanks for stopping by Annie. I was really happy to find a comment from you! Those goodies bring back memories of my childhood! I think I even had that book by Benedek Elek! Great idea to use these in your crafting! I think I'll have a rummage through my parents' attic next time I go for a visit! Have a lovely (rest of the) week! zsuzsa @ InkyDinkyDoodle

Awesome! I absolutely love flea markets, second hand stores, antique stores. It's great to find treasures that one can learn from and re-purpose into a new treasure.

Oooh Annie, seeing your Hungarian finds has really got my creative juices flowing! What amazing stuff. The hand-drawn playing card is fabulous, especially with its back, and the printed ones so unusual and different... The books are totally gorgeous... I am droooooling lol!!

I have just been given some lovely books too, with potential for art. I'll blog soon about them.

Happy belated WOYWW,

Thanks for your return visit, Annie, and I'm glad you like my masterboard. I am feeling terrible today after a busy day yesterday - I never seem to get on top of things and have sufficient energy for Art these days, but at least I made it to my felt class last night! (Blog post now up.)

Those playing cards are interesting too.

The best place to shop is flea markets especially for ephemera like this. Sorry I can't read Hungarian, but the print is pretty good for different type of backgrounds and part bases for mixed media of all types. Thanks for visiting and have a lovely weekend. sorry I am getting back to you late, I've had fun visitors.

Happy WOYWW

Hi Annie,

I'm with you - I love old books! I've been lucky enough to find some great ones free at the local library re-sale store. I bought a german bible for $5 thinking I'd use it in mixed media, but like you, I've had a hard time repurposing the books.

I know there are some translation guides on the web, perhaps you can try one of those? The little girl is adorable!!

Happy belated WOYWW

Budapest sounds like such an exciting place to visit. I love all your finds too, especially the vintage children's books and playing cards. Happy belated WOYWW and Blessings!
